Tits everywhere!

Another magic day on Hilbre saw it raining tits! As the fog rolled in the tits dropped from the sky. Coal Tits to be precise. We were alerted to the presence of at least one Coal Tit by its cll. Then another appeared, and another, and yet another. Altogether at least twenty dropped from the sky and seven were caught and ringed. An amazing spectacle.

At least three Rock Pipits were on the Island and two were caught and ringed.  Other migrants included two Chiffchaffs and a Blackcap whilst overhead visible migration (once the fog lifted) was restricted to Meadow Pipits, a few Starlings and a hnaadfull of Skylarks.

It was nice to learn that one of the Pied Wagtail pullus I ringed in the spring has recently been controlled at Slapton Ley in Devon. I wonder what makes a Wirral Wagtail decide to head to Devon!

In order to keep our energy levels up a bacon buttie is essential - luckily for us the Hilbre Obs has its own canine security / cleaning team made up of Molly & Scruff who guarantee to protect any food left uneaten and to clean up any split crumbs!
