A great day in Cheshire today as three teams took part in the National County bird race. Due to other committments (losing money at the races and guzzling champagne as well as being in sole charge of Molly for the weekend) I didn't take part but joined the teams at various points in their endeavours - including a cracking seawatch on the N Wirral. Good numbers of Manxies, Gannets and terns - including Little - passed continuously and 5 Eiders provided the icing on the cake.
News of a group of Crossbills at nearby Ness Gardens had me shooting off followed hotly by two of the teams. A brilliant sight in the spring sunshine feeding in the top of an Ash tree.
Other good local birds include the return of Spotted Flycatchers at a traditional site close to the house as well as the Lesser -spotted Woodpecker in Stanney and a pair of Tree Sparrows nearby.
